The Bells are Ringing

February 20, 2004 at 9:15 am by K.G. Schneider · 14 Comments ·

My partner and I stood on line for over three hours tonight, but after that long haul were able to make an appointment to get married at noon on Friday, March 5, 2004, at San Francisco City Hall. Thanks to Mayor Newsom and all the supportive people in SF’s government for making this possible. We are thrilled beyond belief to receive full recognition for our relationship in this society.

Congrats here as well. Hope Governor Terminator doesn’t put a stop to it before then.

Congratulations from me, too! I am envious - wish I could get to SF with my partner. After 18 years together, to have our relationship legally recognized would mean more than we could fully express.

“Judicial anarchy?” Since when is Gavin Newsom a judge?

Newsom believes that the limiting-marriage-to-one-favored-group (which I happen to be a member of) act violates the state Constitution. He’s acting on that belief, and suing the state as a result. That will be heard in court.

At worst, you could accuse Newsom of civil disobedience–and judges of following standard practice (that is, not issuing emergency injunctions to parties with no clear standing in a situation). There’s no anarchy here. No “civil disorder” either, despite the governor’s claims.

I see several thousand committed couples acting to strengthen marriage by participating. Somehow, that doesn’t weaken my 26-year-old marriage. I’ve known Karen S. for quite a few years and met her partner. They’re more traditional in some ways than I am, and certainly strike me as people whose relationship strengthens society.

Jack, I don’t want to marry a man. I want to marry my partner of 12 years. Your argument sounds a lot like those tossed around prior to Loving vs. Virginia.

Mazel tov, Karen. This is some of the biggest news I’ve seen via RSS.

“Sort of a conversation stopper, there, isn’t it, Karen? Perhaps that is the whole point.”

Jack, that is just low. You are certainly entitled and encouraged to express your opinions about same-sex marriage and the political machinations that are making it possible at the present, but to trivialize the decision to enter into a lifelong partnership with another person, by characterizing it as some sort of stunt, is insulting to persons of all sexualities. And it bears the stench of a personal attack. Very unbecoming.

Note that we have an appointment to marry on the 5th–who knows what will happen between now and then… but thanks for the well wishes….

    Congrats!

I’m glad you were able to get hitched. I’ll be even happier when all gay couples are afforded the same rights given to straight couples. Don’t let Jack get you down.
