Something that was said at a Bloggercon, and it might have been by Blood, was that ethical bloggers have the ability and responsibility to go back and update old posts with clearly labeled corrections and retractions. We have the advantage in the blogosphere of going back and fixing when print publishers do not. We will all make mistakes and even jump to faulty conclusions -- even if we've done the research. It IS acceptable and important to admit mistakes. I don't like the idea of potentially discouraging new bloggers by insisting they be perfect although I agree that they should do a little research and thinking prior to posting.

Karen, my discomfort with rules or ethical codes for blogging is the implication that all blogs are part of the same genre. But I see blogs as a medium, not a genre--and having a set of ethical guidelines for writing a blog seems to me as problematic as having a set of ethical guidelines for writing a book. What _kind_ of book? A novel? A reference manual? A collection of poems?

I wrote in the summer of 2003 about my unwillingness to adopt a specific code of ethics or posting guidelines for my blog. Re-reading it now I feel pretty much the same way...
