It sounds as if Steven understood this conversation to be conversational and you understood it to be on the record. This will be something I address in later posts on the subject of ethics and blogging.

I'm not sure what the problem is here. Steven asked me via IM to participate. I asked if I could write whatever I wanted. He said there would be some sort of paper to sign which he called a "be nice" clause and I said "good luck on your project, but it sounds like it's not for me." We then swapped some suggestions about how to possibly build an RSS aggregator for PLA bloggers and non-PLA bloggers [i.e. anyone at ALA] content to be aggregated and it was all really positive. Possibly what Steven said wasn't what you and he had discussed, but what he said to me was very straightforward and not at all equivocal: there would be something to sign and part of the thing-to-be-signed would include a "be nice" clause. I didn't misrepresent any discussion I was involved in. If there has been bloggish discussion about this, I haven't even read it yet. I just wanted to explain why I wouldn't be participating, in case people were curious. I hope it goes well and I'll certainly promote it.
