Who better to write than librarians? Librarians know the written word. They value books, magazines and all forms of communication. They esteem writing. They are educated men and women who command, for the most part, superior intellectual knowledge. Such individuals not only can but should be writers.
I became intrigued with "inferno collections" during the time of my library studies at Rutgers and while working at Alexander Library. I thought the concept would make a unique frame for a mystery. I eventually wrote my novel, THE INFERNO COLLECTION, which was published this year by Five Star/Gale. The novel received an excellent review from BOOKLIST, among other publications. Only a librarian could have written this book.

Voldemort of the Blog People, eh? So who would you cast as the Harry Potter crew?

(I would have considered it more of a Blog People versus Muggles thing, myself, casting your Voldemort as one of the Dursleys, Vernon or Dudley. But to each her own.)

Rochelle, I wasn't even thinking about those who write the "scholarly/meaty professional stuff," though I suppose that group needs to be counted among us as well (as long as they don't expect us to polish their paradigms). I was thinking about librarians who write articles, reviews, and other pieces for the popular library press or the media beyond librarianship; librarians who blog (and consider themselves writing when the do so); librarian journalists (whether for the library press or not); and librarians who write (and maybe publish) creative nonfiction, fiction, or poetry. Is that broad enough, do you think?

I'm a little unclear, Karen, about the librararian-writer thing. Do you mean librarians who write about LIS issues, or librarians who define themselves as writers, period? I always feel a bit sheepish identifying as a librarian-writer, because I don't write the scholarly/meaty professional stuff that most might see as "library writing." I identify as a writer who is blessed to have a wealth of story through her chosen profession, librarianship.
