Interesting discussion, I am late to this Blaise Cronin comments. I think Mr. Cronin does have a point, especially when he says

"The pivotal issue is the mauling of civility and the emergence of a crass egocentricity that acknowledges no conventional codes of conduct and accepts no form of cognitive authority."

and I really like the bit here:

"At times as I roamed the blogosphere the words of Alexis de Tocqueville came to mind: ‘One encounters in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which drives the weak to wish to pull the strong down to their level, and which reduces men to preferring equality in servitude to inequality in liberty.’"

That is amazing, I think he is really saying something about the inflation of the importance of "blogs" by bloggers. I really enjoy the comments, although all this talks of Johnson and Pepys seems a bit insincere... my question is this:

Have any "bloggers" come out in support of Gorman or Cronin? I would like to read that.

Thanks,
Tl.

Early Friday Gatling Blog

Since in all likelihood I won't have a chance to post tomorrow, and since I was Derelict on a couple of these things, I'm giving you the Friday blogistan tour on Thursday.

Since Genny mentioned Pepys, I'll mention this fascinating project for those that might have not seen it yet. A London-based web developer named Phil Gyford is serializing Pepys' famous diary -- as a blog: http://www.pepysdiary.com/

Pepys' published diary started on Sunday 1st January 1660, so Gyford started blogging it on 1st January 2003, and has followed the dates forward since then. Perhaps the most interesting part of the project is the hyperlinking, annotation, footnoting, backgrounding and commenting that has grown up around the developing text, turning the weblog into an even more comprehensive guide to the events, people and places of 17th-century London than the original diary.

Johnson, that genre-busting blogger, made the same mistake so many others make when posting their random thoughts to these communication media that are apparently ephemeral, but in reality repurposed and repackaged into eternity. I bet he never meant his tossed-off essays to be commandeered by these American colonists and redistributed electronically hundreds of years later.

Even worse was the fate of Samuel Pepys, who was just trying to distribute a blog to a small audience when not only was he jailed, but the incident was described in a documented lifted wholesale and verbatim onto the web: http://www.bartleby.com/218/1014.html

(Back in the old days before people started PRINTING books, you could keep a diary without having everyone in the world read it. If they wanted a copy they had to write it out by hand themselves. It's just indecent these days.)

I love Samuel Johnson--though he wasn't held up as a model in my MFA program either. Proust, on the other hand, was, and thus it was doubly funny to me that right after I read this post, I read this piece about Proust (http://tinyurl.com/7hw7p) in the NY Times. It ends with a woman saying, of Proust's seven-volume Rememberance of Things Past, "It's the ultimate blog."

Who said we have to become the "Old Guard"? I don't know about you, but I was planning on living forever anyhow (either that, or dying young haha). Seriously, I do appreciate that you took the time to look up the Johnson quote. Your note on it makes a very nice reminder of why we should always remain humble and open to learning new ideas. Learning is a two way street, a fact that many often forget. Thanks for giving us a bit of your learning along the way.
