Mary Jane McPherson Anderson and I got acquainted when I was a Girl Scout and she was a leader from Gainesville, Fl. She and her troop camped with us at a regional camp ( since sold to developers for the prime land!) It was my good fortune to discover when I was looking for a summer job that she had moved to Jacksonville to work as the Head of our Children's Department in our 1905 Carnegie Library. She got me a job as a page and now all these years late I am the only current library employee who has worked in all three of our contemporary Main Libraries.35 years in the profession.....

Thank you Mary Jane for your leadership, getting me to love libraries and being a good storyteller. Although there are few who remember her in the Jacksonville Public Library, there are those of us who miss her ascerbic wit and good counsel.
From one old Girl Scout to another.....Good bye and Make new friends but keep the old..one is silver and the other gold!

Great memory Karen! And I'll point back to this from my blog. One of the reasons that I have been successful in my ALA career is because of Mary Jane Anderson. She was a true mentor and friend. I've been thinking a bit about her over these last few months since I heard that she was very ill, and I am sure she is giving St. Peter a few pointers!

Thanks for sharing this, Karen. I remember her well. One of the last ALA-related projects on which I worked with Mary Jane was setting up the "Member Forum" discussion list. She was very committed to conversations. mg
