Thanks for crafting this resolution. I miss John, but it is nice to see him living on in the web.

Thanks! I'll incorporate all the changes and update this afternoon--I think I have a copy of his c.v. somewhere.

Hi Karen,

You’ve done so much work on this memorial and I appreciate everything you’ve done, it’s amazing...thank you! Here’s John’s awards info:

July 2003, Liberty Award co-recipient on behalf of the Bill of Rights Defense Committee from the Alaska Civil Liberties Union for activities related to the USA PATRIOT Act.
June 2002, Merit Bonus Award recipient for the Consortium Library.
April 2002, Co-recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Technology for implementing remote access to library resources.
April 2001, Co-recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence as a member of the Library Electronics Team, UAA.

Let me know if there’s any other info you need.

Thanks again,
Karen Iliff

Jean, I love your idea. I'm hoping someone with the PLA connection is reading this. If not, when I get back I'll follow through. there are other organizations--maybe even L schools--that might want to do this as well.

Karen, from the road

Oh, gosh, I just heard about John's untimely death from Ed Vielmetti. Via IM. Somehow that was the right way to hear about it.

John and I were partners in crime back in the days when we founded PUBLIB. In fact I still have lots of old email messages from John at that time. Well, we agonized together about appropriate use of the list and made up a lot as we went along. John and I never lost touch. In fact he had recently sent me email about being on one of his podcasts.

John was an inspiration to a lot of us; I will miss him very much. Anything I can do to help this resolution get passed, I'd like to help.

It would be nice if PLA could give the John Iliff Award-- possibly to honor some cool tech project or early adopter individual from a library serving under X people--or something. I can think of at least one sponsor.

Hi Karen,

Thank you so much for initiating this, it's so kind of you. John would be embarrassed at the attention while at the same time he would secretly feel very proud. I only wish he knew how much he meant to his colleagues while he was with us. If there’s anything I can do to help you put this together please let me know. Again, thank you so much to everyone who helped with this tribute.

Karen, this is wonderful. John really deserves this sort of recognition. He was such an inspiring person and such an unsung hero of the profession. He made an indellible mark on librarianship and I think more people should know who he was and the contributions he made. :)
