Does your Michigan trip happen to include an appearance at the UM School of Information (or one of the UM libraries)?

Best wishes for your transition between Places of Work!

I made a version of pfeffernusse every year that I was sure was THE recipe for it, until I encountered other cookbooks--this was in my late teens--and to my distress learned that there are many, many versions of this cookie. The version I made was crunchy in a special way (due to the ammonium carbonate--which is the only tricky part about these cookies: figuring out how to get smelling salts), a little spicey, and buttery, all at once.

Ok, Janie, now you have me convinced... I must find the recipe and I must make these cookies! I promise to share what I find.

Your plans for the month of November sound wonderful. I hope you have scheduled in some time for relaxation too...

Oh, and if you actually make the pfeffernusse then I might need to fly down to Florida to eat some. My grandmother used to make the best feffernusse every Christmas and now that she is gone I miss my annual binge. For a few years the assistant director at PPL would make a batch of pfeffernusse for staff and I was brought back to my childhood, but he retired a few years back and I am without my pfeffernusse once more. More practically, you can just email me your recipe and I can try to replicate (my grandmother's recipe never got passed down since my own mother is hopeless at baking).
