Thanks for your tips on presentations. Thanks also for saying you prefer a hotel to being a guest in a home during your stay. I have probably offended many people by insisting on a hotel during my stay for presentations but I just don't think they would appreciate the machinations I go through to prepare the night before! As to technical problems, one presentation I will never forget was one I did several years ago that totally depended on technology. And electricity. Too bad there was a blackout. Not only did I need to do the "If you could see the presentation, you would clearly see that..." but I had to leave it at "If you could see..."

Guy Kawasaki has occasional good comments about speaking at his blog, see "How to get a Standing Ovation": http://blog.guykawasaki.com/2006/01/how_to_get_a_st.html

Today, he points to an excellent article on organizing panel discussions: http://www.scottkirsner.com/panels.htm

Christina, I agree. Not knowing the audience up front is really unsettling.

What I hate is when they can't tell you anything about the audience. I've given two talks when the people 1) couldn't describe the room 2) couldn't tell me how many people were expected 3) what the interests/experience level of the people who were likely to attend would be... I've also been told I was going to give a more advanced session only to be confronted with a room of beginners... The money isn't that important (well maybe it would be if I got some!) but being considerate of your guest *is* important.

Sweet! Looking forward to your talk at NASIG, even though they scheduled you for the 8am Saturday morning session. And we should go out for drinks/dinner at some point.
