Karen, you're a treasure. You're an exceptional writer, without a doubt. You are engaging, insightful, humorous, personal and you make it all seem as easy as rolling off a log. You may feel like you write at five miles an hour, but we'd be by your side at whatever speed. It's posts like this that almost make me despair of ever achieving such writing accomplishment. But I plod along behind you, and Meredith Farkas, and others with true writing talent and think that one day I may be able to achieve something similar through sheer determination and, dare I say, repetition. Meanwhile, may all your stretches be downhill, with wheels, and grease.

A wonderful post! I used to do the write-at-lunch thing back when I had a non-writing job. Even though I never could really write anything at lunch, just the simple act of trying seemed to make it easier in the evenings when I actually could write. (Of course, sometimes it made for crazy afternoons at work because my brain would be thinking of ideas for the written piece instead of thinking about work and it would be just like you described, except in reverse!)

Ah, but grants are a separate genre, bearing a strong resemblance to historical non-fiction of the type favoured by Tuchmann. We know it's true, but there are lots of details seasoning the truth that are not well supported by the evidence.

Re: professional reading is for lunchtime: that's my strategy too. One of my coworkers once asked me, "Do you read fiction?"

Yes, just not at the office.
