Tim, you have broken my heart, but in the words of a famous American, I Shall Survive!

I concur on the critical mass stuff. In a BIG way. Maybe I need to talk about that. Adding a "tagging" function in an OPAC is all but pointless. What, you get five tags? Please! Leveraging a living, breathing social software network -- e.g. Librarything for Libraries -- is very smart. I saw a similar use of Amazon, but I still prefer how LT does its thang -- it was very well-executed. I said eons ago that libraries need to take advantage of larger networks.

I should take a picture of my whiteboard at work. I explain that SRU is still in the model of forcing the target to conform to the source, and this irks me. We have absolutely got to get a grip on that. I have another library application in mind that I won't discuss on this blog but which maddens me with its assumption that THE WHOLE WORLD REVOLVES AROUND LIBRARY SERVICES. Serious cringe-factor.

I think Common Knowledge might be "free as in a game of tag." It's free, but you need a lot of people doing it, or it isn't fun.

So many of these projects need to get to critical mass. The library world doesn't need any more much-discussed (and generally over-engineered) solutions that end up not spreading. SRU comes to mind, and I just don't *get* why we need OAI—maybe you can explain it to me.

Oh, and since you proposed marriage on my blog, I feel obligated to reply on yours. No dice. The gun thing scares me, and I dislike cats.
