Writing for writers is a bit like smiling at dentists, but dentists are people too, and appreciate a genuine smile as much as the rest of us, I expect.

At least you aren't writing for a search engine. That would be sad. Says the search engine engineer.

In any craft, you learn to balance awareness of the craftsmanship with enjoyment of the creation. Guitar players listen to guitarists very differently than I do, but they still enjoy music. I look at photographs differently than most people (and I *want* a copy of the Freud photo), but I still love photography. My voice lessons make me notice sloppy vowels and consonants in singing, but I still like Tom Waits.

King's comments don't strike me as news. Maybe a bit of sellable sizzle, but not news.

If you want to think about craft, I recommend David Pye, "The Nature and Art of Workmanship".

On the "aboutness" of a journal, I find that essential. The major thing that blogs have brought to the web is editorial voice. That is massively important.

Time to find out if Kepler's carries Gastronomica.

"like what I do on Land’s End when I can’t figure out why I can’t find clogs in size 5. (Because Satan told Land’s End to stop carrying shoes smaller than size 6, that’s why. )"

But it's not just Land's End, it's a nearly universal conspiracy by women's clothing catalogs to sell nothing smaller than a size 6! I'm with you in this battle, sistah.
