Thanks, Debi! I wonder how well ol' Holden holds up stacked up against them. I adored Catcher in the Rye back in the day... would I still?

Tobias Wolfe's "Old School" also has very adroit use of POV... perhaps my favorite example: starting from the student's point of view and then at the end shifting to the headmaster's. (It's also one of my favorite examples of humor in writing.)

Putting aside your very wise thoughts on, well, wisdom, I would actually like to make some recommendations to anyone who does like reading good books (fiction, though) told from the perspective of children. There's Ellen Foster by Kaye Gibbons, and H by Elizabeth Shepard, and Cold Sassy Tree by Olive Ann Burns. Told in retrospect but very much a true representation of the pre-adolescent mindset is my favorite, Cats Eye by Margaret Atwood. It's very hard to hit that middle ground you talked about, somewhere between genuine and too-smart-for-their-age, but when it's done right, it's wonderful. It's like capturing any voice - it just takes imagination and scrutiny. I love writing from that perspective...it's a challenge, but very rewarding.

Thanks. You are correct, entirely, there at the end, about why it is all still worthwhile.
