We don't have CSA's. I know, I know, but we don't. Tallahassee has tried to establish CSA's and they haven't lasted. (I feel like I'm having the conversation I had with my food writing class. "Write for an alternative newspaper!" Well, that would be the St. Pete newspaper...)

I was tempted to write "welcome aboard the granola wagon, Karen" when I thought that might sound pretty snotty, even coming from this here crunchy freak! But seriously, have you looked into a CSA? Community Supported Agriculture co-ops, also known as "farm shares," are pretty popular here in the Chicago area, and I bet there are some by you. For us, joining one last summer gave us the chance to try all sorts of new produce we'd never had before, and it all came with INSTRUCTIONS from the farmers themselves. I wrote to the farmers one week and said something like "It's great that there are four types of greens in my box this week, and that you include recipes for all of them -- but heck, man, which is which?!" Then they started including photos with their weekly newsletters. It was life-altering for us, in just the way you describe the goals of your lenten journey. Good luck -- and let me know if you want some great vegetarian recipes to augment your happy meat/cheese/eggs!

Farm eggs rock. They do. They are tastier than just about any other form of protein (well, except perhaps Brazil nuts -- I'm the one who picks them out of the bowl).

It has been an adjustment for me to live in a place where the farmer's market only lasts a few months and where tomatoes are very, very hard to grow.

I can, however, get eggs and meat from people in my town. The egg person even delivers.
