We bought a Prius 2 years ago, back when you could still get a deal on them. It is without a doubt the best car I have ever had ... even better than my '80 Honda wagon! Great gas mileage, very low CO2 emissions, lots of cool toys (continuously variable transmission, regenerative braking, Blue Tooth, etc.), and plenty of room. They are hard to find on dealer lots these days, and they're certainly pricey, but if you have to buy a car anyway, well......

Robin, that sounds wonderful. With just one car in the family we need wheels now -- with me on the road, sharing a car doesn't work. Still, one can dream...

Just read an article in the Washington Post on the Smart Fortwo car - article was something like LIFE IN THE CUTE LANE - sorry to muddy the waters, I think there's a yearlong waiting list ... still sounded like your kind of car.

Karen:

For what it's worth, Tom ordered a new Prius with all the options he wanted on it from Japan. New on the lots is about impossible, though I have found some used from our local Toyota dealer. We've test driven and love the fact that the MPG indicator sometimes soars to 75 MPG or more. There will be an issue with batteries in the future - cost, commodities required to manufacture - but we're looking at being able to be mobile in a very mass-trans-unfriendly environment here in the midwest. Toyota is also coming out with plug-ins that run 40 mmiles or so without any gas at all, but lithium-ion batteries will be expensive to replace and will wear out more frequently than the Prius' battery.
