I have been a public library director at several libraries, and worked at more. I have lived through GEAC, CLSI, CARL, etc. I have been a director in a consortium and stand alone, Epixtech to Dynix & Sirsi-Dynix, as well as, wait for it, III. They all have pluses and minuses, and for the customer it really doesn't matter. (And in reality for the staff it doesn't either.) You got that right.

Now to a little phrase which caught my eye, and for which I want to take you to task (but in a friendly way): "My stupidity will help me at MPOW as well." There are many things I would consider calling you, but "stupid" is not on the list! You have been a well-spoken, thoughtful, and gifted writer in our profession who has also given a lot to enrich and improve it (I am thinking of Core Values I, and moderation of PUBLIB). Don't sell yourself short! (Ooops, after I wrote that I thought about what a bad pun, but decided to leave it, because I know you well enough to know that you will like it!)

I made the same suggestion to Verity about six years ago, pointing out that their real value was in consulting, support, and document conversion. They didn't take my advice either, and I was at an official multi-day strategy meeting.

I actually suggested, years ago when I was a SirsiDynix customer and Koha was a newborn babe, that their core business was library software support, and that they could own the library-OSS market if they'd start selling Koha support and/or ASP contracts.

I still think my advice was good, and I wonder what the library technology world would have looked like today if it had happened.

This "MPOW" convention makes it really, really hard to track stuff down. Drives me nuts.

As a SirsiDynix customer myself, I don’t want to jeopardize my relationship with the company either, and as a customer, I was not surprised by the Abram's position. One, however, has to wonder if SirsiDynix has even considered supporting Open Source software. Can't they manage virtual machines on "the cloud" as well as their citrus competitors? It would be a money making opportunity for them, and quite possibly the customer base that has to migrate off of Horizon would not leave the company.

I could not agree more with your assessment of Stephen’s paper. With all of his claims and back-fill (e.g. his blog, in the end it was a disservice to the profession, and like you, I hope to focus on the bigger picture. Moving on...

PS - Welcome back to CA!
