There are indeed a lot of places in Emeryville! I viewed one last night in excellent condition except there were stairs and stairs and stairs (and the view was of other condos–a strangely Emeryville-esque approach to the world).

Julie, yeah… I now appreciate California in its fabulously spendy glory in a way I never have before. I’m not leaving, ever again!

Best of luck to you both. When I read your post I felt smug about living in the Midwest where real estate is still affordable. But on the other hand, no ocean, no mountains, minimal cultural advantages. Hey yeah, THAT’s why it’s affordable.

Apartment hunting is the one time I take full advantage of the librarian stereotype. Potential landlords are always pleased to hear that I’m a librarian. I tend to mention that before I mention I have a cat.

As you are thinking of where to live, consider casual carpool in the public transportation options. I used to live in Oakland on the hill between Grand and Piedmont, right near a casual carpool pick up. You’re in the city in 20 minutes, near public transportation there.

Also consider Emeryville. Lots of ‘apartment homes’ built have no buyers now, and they are renting instead. The area near Cafe Biere in Emeryville is in transition, and is about to also get a Lanesplitters pizza! Yum!
