I really liked this post. I am younger than you but I fear that with the economy, some choices I've made, and the general vicissitudes of life, my career and life may not be going in a straight line (of glory in academic librarianship). But you know, we can still make a difference every day. And this post is an example of ways you make a difference: you are extremely inspiring. I really like the way you've made a connection with this book and are supporting the author and the subject. That is one of the best things about being a librarian: the ability to do this! Thank you!

I never heard of Chauncey Bailey, but I do know the sad feeling of hitting mid-life having assumed that this is when I'd be hitting my stride with the kids grown and a lifetime of work experience to offer, only to discover that I am an unwanted commodity in today's working climate. I also now know that I have no role model for this; my father worked at the same job for 30+ years and my mother had only two jobs her entire adult life. This has not happened to me.

Nonetheless, I can take from Chauncey Bailey's story the knowledge that I can still hold to my values, my convictions and, in humility, know that others have gone through the valley, too. We are truly fellow travelers through this life.
