One of the ironies about Gorman’s comment that he wouldn’t go to jail on behalf of the Patriot Act because he’s an academic librarian (and 64 years old–not that much older than Judith Miller) is that the example was set for the rest of us over thirty years ago by you guessed it, an academic librarian, Zoia Horn, who at the time of her arrest was 54 years old.
Sometimes LibraryLand drives me bonkers, but then I think about all the librarians tripping over their feet to be the next martyr for the cause. Me too; I’d go gladly. It would be an honor, if not a precedent. I’m 48, for what that’s worth. I suspect I’d give you the same answer 20 years hence.
It’s an honor to trip over, as you say. I went over and read the little bit about Zoia Horn. Learned something new. I suspected someone somewhere had done it, but now I know. Thanks. . .and thanks for link. Best.
Thanks for pointing out Zoia Horn! I didn’t know about this CLA award, probably because I’m a life-long East-Coaster. This is great, it gives me hope… particularly for future ALA presidencies.
