Filters Do the Darndest Things

Remember all the snake-oil hucksterism filtering companies dished out to librarians in the early days, before the companies turned their persuasive powers to the courts, where lesser minds prevail?

Today a school librarian advised me her school can’t access Take Our Girls and Boys to the Polls: 18 Election Activities for You and Your Under 18-Year-Old. This site is run by The White House Project, an organization dedicated to putting women in the White House (fully-dressed, in leadership roles).

This block is due to a filter making a stupid choice due to inherent weaknesses of the technology (and that’s bad) or making a craven poltical choice due to inherent weaknesses of people given far too much power over what other people read (and that’s bad, too).

    “*UNDER 18-YEAR-OLD*”

That set of keywords is deadly.
