Hot Topics for DuPage Webcast

March 26, 2005 at 9:35 am by K.G. Schneider · 1 Comment ·

A wee mouse pointed me to an upcoming webcast featuring a discussion of “hot topics” and “technology” in librarianship. No disrespect to the panelists, but since this webcast is billed as “ideal for librarians who have been unable to attend conferences and workshops,” I wish this group could be broadened to include someone who was a library technology leader (and that’s not a coy hint, as I’m too specialized for that task). Maybe someone who has no interest in running for ALA president. No disrespect to that office, either, but it seems to have been the criterion for selecting panelists. I also dread the idea of Gorman having another opportunity to talk about Google, and I hope being the anti-Google doesn’t become his shtick.

What’s most infuriating about Gorman’s anti-Googlism is that he’s been doing his level best to force all nuance out of the conversation.

I *don’t know* how this Google digitization thing is going to turn out. Nobody knows. But because I’m willing to let them try and open-minded about the potential results, I’ve been forced will-I nill-I into the “mindless Google-booster” space in Gorman’s mind and in the minds of anyone influenced by Gorman.

This annoys me no end. And I’m dead sure I’m not the only one, either.
