Wonderful news! As posted on the almost-blog of library-related Hurricane Katrina news that American Libraries has been running continuously since before Katrina struck, and as shared by other sources from within the NOPL Diaspora, the main library and key archives of New Orleans Public Library appear to have survived Katrina quite well. Below is a picture of Main’s interior, taken yesterday.
I admit freely I started crying when I read the email messages among NOPL staff. I also very firmly do not apologize for caring whether libraries survived Katrina. All of us care about the degree of devastation along the Gulf: the people, the houses, the animals, the economy, the cultural je ne sais quois that was the Big Easy. Libraries are part of that heritage, and from our perspective, it’s really all right if libraries are very high on that list. We’re the ones who understand best that libraries change lives.
I admit, I just saw this…I am so happy to see that NOPL is in pretty good shape.
I agree…Karen. Libraries are part of the heart and soul of any community…and we should mourn for them and the people who created them and who used them…some of their contents are irreplaceable. Thanks for caring…
